My Ipad 2 states I have one unread mail, buter there is no mail

Both in inbox & unread, states I have one message, but there is none

Force close the mail app and open it again. Sometimes it's mail that isn't fully downloaded

Alternatively, you can disable the toggle next to mail in the Mail, Contacts, Calendars setting, reboot your iPhone, and then re-enable the toggle next to Mail. By the way, I'm assuming you're using the native Mail app with an Outlook.com/Hotmail email account.
