macbook pro no longer recognizes external CD drive after el cap update

I updated my wife's early 2015 MacBook Pro to El Capitan v 10.11.3 from Yosemite the other day and now it no longer recognizes her external CD/DVD drive (LG Super Multi). She puts a lot of audio books (in CD form) onto her computer so she has stuff to listen to all day at work, so it is becoming a big inconvenience for her. I've tried doing multiple searches online and can't come up with any fixes that aren't super technical. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
