iPhone XR using built in mic instead of EarPods mic

My iPhone XR is using the iPhone mic instead of the lightning connector EarPods mic these are the lighting connector EarPods that came with the iPhone when I got it from sprint and they work fine I can hear from both left and right it just isn’t using the EarPods mic is there a way to make my iPhone use the EarPods mic instead of the iPhone XR mic

I have two guesses - either the EarPods are bad (which you could verify by trying another pair, or trying this pair on a friend's phone), or you may have lint in the lightning port on the iPhone itself that is preventing proper connection with the EarPods. You can try using a non-metal blunt object (like a wooden toothpick) to try to gently dislodge any lint or dirt in the lightning port and see if that helps.

I’ve tried both of these using a brand new pair of EarPods still didn’t work and cleaning out the lightning port with both a toothpick and some compressed air it’s completely clean
