Also if you live in the US cell carriers are allowed to lock the phone to their network until it's paid off. There are two different versions of iPhones in the US as well. One has an Intel modem, and one has a Qualcomm modem. The iPhones with Qualcomm modems supposedly get better cell reception than the Intel models. That's what I'm more interested in. The Qualcomm models are a little faster too, but Apple has apparently used software to negate that difference a bit.

Verizon Wireless charges a $30 upgrade fee when you upgrade a phone with the same phone number when you buy a new phone that has a Verizon SIM in it, even if you buy outright rather than with a payment plan. If you buy a SIM-free phone and put the SIM from your old phone in, there is no upgrade fee.

I forgot about the stupid upgrade fees. T-Mobile will usually waive it if you ask them.
