ios 10.1.1 apps no longer auto-update

iphone 7, ios apps no longer automatically update. I can manually update them by pressing the update all button. Previously the apps would automatically update when i connected to wifi. I have tried to log out of itunes through the app and log back in. My payment information is up to date.

Did you go to Settings → iTunes & App Store to enable the toggle next to "Updates" under the Automatic Downloads section?

Try Reset All Settings.
Reset All Settings
Go to Settings >General >Reset >Reset All Settings. This resets to default everything in Settings, including notifications, alerts, brightness, and clock settings like wake up alarms.

I erased the setting and the apps are still pending.

If they're still pending, delete them in settings>General >Usage >Manage storage > scroll to the App > Tap it> delete. Then start over.
