How to get textmessages to show on a locked screen on IPHONE 5s

when youre AT and T iphone 5s has a screen locked and you receive a text why wont it show on the screen who the text is from instead of having to check the phone to see if you have any texts?

Go to Settings > Notifications > Messages and make sure that 'Show on Lock Screen' is toggled on.
