I've been looking at the MacBook for a while now. Best Buy have it for $899.99 and I'm seriously considering it.

Once all setup, I want to install Windows 8.1, too. Working in IT, I only support Windows and Windows Servers. So having Windows installed is paramount.

I was thinking about the MacBook Air, but that lacks long term use and expansion, no?

    Any thoughts?

The Pros aren't upgrade able either. The RAM and storage you start with is what you keep.

Hmm, are you sure about that? I was under the impression I could increase the ram to 8GB, or more, and if needed replace the SSD drive to larger, if I ever needed it. No?

It's a tough decision. I ultimately went with the air because of the portability and the awesome battery. I have a work PC and laptop so mine is for personal use. Makes it easy.

Yep. Ever since the Pro went retina, it has not been upgradeable. RAM is soldered to the motherboard and the SSD can't be upgraded without voiding your warranty. The last Pro to be upgradeable was the 2012 non-retina which I believe they still sell but hasn't had a processor update since 2012. That version also is the last Mac with a dvd drive.

The Pro retina is a great machine. Based on what you described using it for, as long as you have at least 8GB RAM, you should be fine and it should last a long time.

Update: I returned the MacBook Pro Retina. Hard drive is simply too small, switched to a MacBook Pro i5, 500GB, but only 4GB memory. Don't worry, I'm upgrading that this week or next.

I looked really, really close at the Surface Pro 3, but I want to install a couple VM's for work. The MacBook will probably do the job better. It is in the process of upgrading to the latest update...

So you got the 2012 model with the dvd drive. I had one of those before getting a retina Pro. It is easy to upgrade the memory and even the hard drive to an SSD yourself. If you are feeling really adventuresome, you can replace the dvd drive with a secondary hard drive.

The older MacBooks are upgradable, which are the ones on sale at best buy for $899..
