Connecting MBA to TV via hdmi

Ok so I found this hdmi cable at work. It has hdmi on one end and what appears to be minidisplay port on the other. When I hook it up to my man and tv. The MBA seems to recognize it, as the display settings change on MBA when plugged in, but nothing happens on the tv. No signal is detected

Any ideas? Does the cable have to be thunderbolt to work?

It sounds like the hdmi side may be damaged if the display settings change on the Mac when you connect the cable
