IP 3g jailbroke

Need a little hand holding, just got a IP 3g and trying to understand how it all works.
It came with cydia installed ios 4.1, 4.2.1
Can I go to itunes and download apps without the iphone getting updated? And without tethering, Don't want to chance loosing the jailbreak.
I joined here today after spending several hours on stupid youtube junk, figured ya'll knew the right way to go.

You can download from iTunes to your hearts content. Cydia will have no effect on that. What Cydia does is open up a whole new world of apps and tweaks. If what you mean by tethering is synching with iTunes - then yes no problem, synch away. iTunes will not automatically update or otherwise remove your jailbreak.
