Restoring 4.2.6 firmware via iTunes

If you download the 4.2.6 ipsw from apple, you can simply restore this firmware via itunes...

How do you do this? I downloaded the 4.2.6 ipsw, but I cannot figure out how to restore from this file. I have unarchived it, but the only option I can find to restore is via the restore button on the "Summary" page on iTunes, which automatically takes me to Apple online for them to restore to the original factory settings, which I assume will take me to the current firmware I'm trying to get away from.

I downloaded the 4.2.6 firmware (.ipsw file). I fired up itunes, connect iphone. Then I hold down alt button and click on "restore", which opens up a dialogue box where I can point to the downloaded firmware. Then it starts the process like normal.

Don't extract or modify the .ipsw file. BTW, I am using a mac; on windows, i think you click shift and restore instead.

Basically, I connect the phone to the computer. I then run iTunes (on the comp). Click on the iphone tab. Where it has two buttons (update, and restore). I hold alt button and click on restore. I then select the ipsw from the resulting dialogue box. I then get a message stating "Your firmware will be restored, and will verify with Apple."

I click ok, and off it goes. I've done it 2 or 3 times already (going from 4.2.7 to 4.2.6); so far no issues as you described.

Also, for jailbreaking, I used greenpois0n rc6.1.

You might have your SHSH blobs saved for 4.2.6 which is why you're able to downgrade. If you want to downgrade you need to, have your shsh blobs saved through Cydia or locally with TinyUmbrella. Then

Download firmware you want to reload
Edit the Hosts file
Put iPhone into DFU mode
Open iTunes, it will say there is a device in recovery mode and needs to be restored
Hold the Shift(Windows) or Option(Mac) key and in iTunes click restore
Browse to the firmware file you downloaded and let iTunes do it's thing

Search for Hosts in the forum to see how you need to edit it for the process.

I kept getting errors when trying to restore from the 4.2.6 ISPW and finally did it on another computer and it went through flawlessly. Thanks!

So does this actually jail break 4.2.7? Or only downgrades you to 4.2.6?

Read my post just above you need your SHSH blobs in order to downgrade firmware. Unless this ipsw/firmware was made with Pwnage Tool or Sn0wbreeze it will not reload onto your phone without your SHSH blobs. This is also going to wipe your phone so be sure you backup and sync before starting the procedure.

I am getting this message also and was able to restore from 4.2.7 to 4.2.6 in the past. I think apple just did something yesterday or today because this message is new. I never had this happen since I have been restoring for the past few days. Is there a fix to this?

How do I get tinyumbrella to work exactly to jailbreak my phone using 4.2.7. Is there any instructions for 4.2.7 anywhere.

TinyUmbrella is not a JB tool it just backs up your SHSH blobs. If you don't know what the blobs are do a search on here for SHSH or blobs.

The spam comes when the thread is popular it's as inevitable as viagra ads in your email lol so just report it with the caution button at the top right I beleive.

Got my phone the day 4.2.7 came out not knowing this. Updated as soon as I got home and have been waiting patiently for this JB :)

So apparently I saved my SSH according to this?:

Can't jailbreak 4.2.6 anymore, looks like apple is no longer signing it. Hopefully greenpoison will come out with a 4.2.7 update real soon.

Anyone able to jailbreak 4.2.7 untethered way
