which program would work better to sync calendar data to iCloud, MS 365 or 2016

I'm trying to sync my High Sierra Mac using Outlook calendar data to iCloud so it will propagate to my iPhone. I am currently using a MacBook Pro running 10.13 and Mac Office 2011.
Which Mac Office program would accomplish the sync process easier and more reliably.

If you’ve configured either app with your iCloud account via both your Mac and your iPhone then both should sync. With that being said, I would like to think that the native Calendar app would perform best.

I have been on gmail for so long and all my calendars and contacts are synced no matter what device I use. I just sign in to my gmail account and I am good to go.
