Cannot edit playlists

Hello, I just noticed today that I'm no longer able to edit playlists. When at a playlist, at the top above the list the words "edit" and "clear" are in light faded gray and don't respond to touch; only the word "delete" on the upper right works. At the main playlist screen there is the Add (+) button which still functions. I have an iPhone 6+ (gold) on Verizon, running iOS version 8.1.2. Can edit on iTunes desktop, but not in the handheld. What's up?

Have you tried a reboot? Do you have iTunes match and is it turned on?

I just tried both a power off and a reset (2-button hold-down) and nothing changed. I don't have iTunes Match.

Try signing out of iTunes on your phone, then sign back in.

Well, that unfortunately creates another question - how do I sign out of iTunes on my phone? I don't use iTunes Radio or iTunes Match. This is about just basic playlists in my device that play whether I'm connected or not. Automatic downloads toggled on or off doesn't seem to make any difference either
