Duplicates in iPad Contacts

I added birthdays to some of my contacts and it made duplicates of them. I tried deleting one but it would just delete both of them and any change I make to one, it makes on the other. How can I fix this?

It may be easier to just login to iCloud via a computer (if you have an icloud account) and make the necessary changes to the contacts. When you're done, it will automatically sync with your device(s). You can also get rid of the duplicates while your logged in online.
