my IPad Air will not back up, say has never been backed up

My IPAD Air will not back up, it gives me a message (Never Backed Up) in the back ground when I first click on Back up it shows loading, but disappears quickly to the never backed Up.
Any suggestions

How are you trying to back it up - via iTunes or iCloud? Either way, it should be backup. Try rebooting your iPad and then try again.
