You probably encountered a limitation of your email provider, OR your carrier. It's also possible your email is being delayed until you connect to WiFi and THEN it will go out. What type of email account is it? You should be able to swipe to delete it, BUT for certain email accounts the default setting for swipe is to ARCHIVE not delete, BUT this can be changed in settings...
