HOW DO I UPGRADE TO EL CAPITAN from 10.8.5 as SEIRRA WON'T WORK

I am running 10.8.5 on my macbook pro - when I search for upgrade via app store or even ABOUT THIS MAC it tells me I have ONE..however it's blacked out..I have THOUSANDS of dollars worth of musical VSTs, you name it PRO TOOLS on this MF and NEED IT TO MAKE MONEY PLUS the ENTIRE adobe creative suite..I want to modernize this POS but I'm not finding much success to I have to BUY el capitan? WTF? Does anyone know? Thanks?PEACE!!!!!

What exactly do you mean "Sierra won't work?" I don't think you'll be able to "upgrade" to El Cap anymore since a newer OS is out. Could be wrong though.
