Why is my iPhone 4S not recognizing headphones

I have a iPhone 4S and I tried to plug in some headphones I used for my iPod 4. When I plugged in it didn't play it in the headphones but it would still play on the speakers. I've tried to unplug and replug the headphones in until I pushed it in until I hear the click. I've tried to use different headphones but the same outcome came.

Clean out any dirt/debris that may be inside the headphone port. If that doesn't fix the problem, make a Genius Bar appointment with the nearest Apple store to have them diagnose and possibly fix the problem for you.
