newly imported photos (from an iPhoto library) now openin Photos at only halfthe original file size?

For example - a 12 MB image now opens up at 6MB or less? and the resolution is showing up at 72DPI. The file dimensions are still the same, but these two items have changed from the original file. It's not just a few, it's all of the images in that library - and I'm not using the cloud library. Please help!

I can only assume it's importing an optimized version of your pics to help preserve storage space.
