Why is Apple Mail persistently failing to deliver mail?

Why is Apple Mail persistently failing to deliver mail -

I can send but not receive mail. Apple Care has 'fixed' this problem three times [each 'fix' takes an hour + to fix] but recurs within a couple of days.
Using a new MacBookPro Retina running 10.9.5

Need more info... iCloud account? Or another provider? Have you checked with that provider for specific set-up instructions for Apple devices from the provider?

Same has happened to me. I stopped using the mail app on my macbook because ever since the update it has not worked. Always some issue with the server even after deleting it and redoing everything. Maybe sometime apple will get the mail situation figured out. Worked fine before yosemite update.
