Any ideas on increasing the volume on my iPad Mini?

I have the original mini iPad and the volume on high is too low for me to hear my audiobooks. Any ideas for increasing the volume?

Is there a separate volume control function within the audio book? Can you use a pair of earphones?

I have hearing loss. Earbuds work great for hearing better.
