Why did all my photos disappear when trying to import them to my Mac from my iPhone?

I tried to import my iPhone photos into my Mac and there is no iPhoto and worse, my photos have all disappeared. I feel sick cos I had several completed photo albums. I am too scared to shut down in case I lose all my photos forever.
