reinstalling OS on 2010 Macbook

husband got a macbook from someone and they tried to wipe it but totally destroyed the OS. Ive been hard at it trying to do a recovery but have had no luck. I have Snow Leopard which is what the Apple Tech told me I needed and I can't get it to install. UGH
