If I upgrade to the new iPhone when it comes out, can I "restore" my saved app data?

Title basically says it all.

I currently have the 3G, and I will definitely be upgrading when the new iPhone comes out. However, I have tons of apps with saved data that I don't want to lose during the upgrade.

I know that this data gets backed up to iTunes and can be restored to the same device, but can you "restore" saved app data to a completely different device?

You should be able to.

Just make sure you do this.

Plug in your 3G and update it to 4.0. Make a backup and when you go to set up your new iPhone, just set up from the backup. I am assuming it should work. If it does, all your app data will go with it.

you don't need to do that do you? But I suppose it would be a good idea to avoid the malfunctioning some users reported when setting up from a backup.

You should be fine though OP, it's a pretty simple process.
