how to toggle apple tv remote to access subtitles

instructions say to toggle closed captions for accessing subtitles on apple tv remote.
Please advise how to do this. My Apple TV is the one with the silver remote

If you have a 4th generation TV, simply swipe downward via the remote and then select "subtitles".
