How can I unsync my old phone from new one?

My hubby just started using my old iphone 4 (upgrade for him from a flip phone!) but when he deleted a contact from the list on that one, it was also deleted from my new iphone 6. What can I do to unsync the phones?

Get him his own AppleID for iCloud an email, etc. and use Family Share for purchases.
