Error (1) Itunes - Unable to update or restore

Hi, my apologies if this has been covered before im at a loss with my iphone as the title says unable to restore or update, receive error (1) when trying to action either process in itunes. This is error (1) not the (-1) error

I've read on a few forums that this error may be down to hardware within the handset, if this is the case does anyone if it can be fixed and what parts are required.

If not hardware, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
