Do you need a physical disk or can I just download the digital version from Microsoft and boot camp it

You will need either an installation disc or an ISO File of the disk, or a USB as shown by Karen.

Either way will work. If you get a cd, I'm assuming your Mac has a cd drive or you have an external cd drive for it. But putting the installer on a USB works fine too. See above link/instructions.

Perfect yes I do have a cd drive is anyone using windows 8 on their macbook hows the performance

Win8 should run fine. But I don't have any personal experience with it.

Ty Karen i Just bought the cd installation of windows 8.1 but it came with 64 bit cd and 32 bit cd which one should i install for a 2012 MacBook Pro i7?

That's plenty. But depending on where on the drive OS X has scattered your files, it still may need to move them to get a contiguous partition for Windows.

I installed Windows 7 and then Windows 8 on a Macbook Air running OSX Mavericks. (I've since made that laptop OSX only, after running it as a dual-boot OSX/Linux Mint machine.)

It went very easily. The partition of my SSD took seconds. Will it be the same for an old-fashioned hard drive? Unknown.

Just make sure you have a USB key that's at least 8 GB.

Even if you have a CD version of Windows, Bootcamp will create a bootable USB for installation.

Yes, a Bootcamp installation of Windows creates a dual boot computer that has both OSX and Windows.
