After getting my iPhone 5 unlocked, can I upgrade the iOS that's on it?

i got my uncles iphone5 which is at&t contact..
im goin to get it unlocked it in india..
its ios6 in it
..after unlocking it can i upgrade it to ios 7 or 8? plz reaply .....

iOS 7 is available only for the iPhone 4 and later, the iPad 2 and later, the iPad Mini, and lastly, the fifth generation of the iPod Touch. So you are good.

Also iOS 8 will be compatible for the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch fifth-gen, iPad 2, iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina Display, iPad Mini, iPad 4, and iPad 3.
