iphone/ipad iailbreak, is restoring important before jailbreaking?

Hi guys

I've jailbroken my ipod touch before with redsnow. But everytime I have I've restored my itouch to factory settings before I started jailbreaking. Now I've always wondered if it necessary to restore be I did it?

Is it necessary to restore only the first time you jailbreak? or is it everytime you update to a newer firmware? or is it not necessary at all?

I'm gonna jailbreak my ipad next, which I'm guessing is the same from what I've seen. I'm thinking of using JailBreakMe

i'm no expert, but i think backing up is the important step. i'll be watching for a more knowledgeable response, but i think it's wasted time.

In my experience I have not need to restore before jailbreaking. Like ducky said, it is very important to back up before you do so.
