Ive always turned off the auto brightness on all of my devices, including Android. I put the brightness at 40 or 50% and never have any viewing issues. I turn it up when watching videos or movies.
I found the auto brightness would fluctuate too much for me depending on how I am holding the phone.

I keep mine at 35% on my 5s when I had my 4 on iOS 8 the auto brightness was crazy how fast it adjusted

All of my iOS devices do well with auto brightness. My android devices do not.

I never use auto brightness. It always bothered me a lot. I like my own setting. Usually my brightness is on about 45%. I don't think Ive ever used my brightness above, say, 55%.
