Swapping Phones?

Ok, probably a little long winded for nothing..

I currently have an iPhone 3GS, 16gig.

I am ?inheriting? two old iPhones (friends of mine are getting the new ones).
What I?m getting is a 3G 16gig, and a 3GS 32gig. I?d like the give them to my parents as a gift. They currently are AT&T customers.

This is what I want to do:

Swap my 3GS 16gig for the 3GS 32gig. Leaving me with a 3G and 3GS to give to my parents. I was hoping to give this as a surprise, but I don?t know if they?ll need to be present at the store, to activate the new phones. One of them may have a data plan (but if I remember correctly, iPhones have their own data plan, or am I wrong?)

Also, when I switch mine, after doing an iTunes backup on my old phone ? do I just plug in and it will re-sync with the new phone?

Looking for suggestions.

just give them the phones and they can go activate them. You aren't allowed to change other peoples accounts.
