Buy Iphone 3gs from Apple without activating from AT&T

What happens if I buy an Iphone from Apple and not activate it with AT&T? Does AT&T automatically start the service? How does that work.

You have to plug it into iTunes no matter what. You can't use the phone unless you do.

It's still LOCKED to AT&T and you need to get service to activate the phone.

Once you can get it jailbroken, you can pass the activation through iTunes. No need for unlocking.

You can always wait for dr the jailbreak as well. However I'm not entirely sure that people have jail broken without already activating. You can always go on the jailbreak section of the forums or google around.

I've jailbroken. In fact, if the iPhone was activated already, no new activation is needed. Apple stopped bricking them a while ago, but jailbreaking definitely bypasses that.
