blank screen on my iphone 3G

I'm assuming my battery is completely dead and needs to be replaced. Screen is blank except for time and wi-fi signal on top. Connecting it to Mac doesn't help. Please advise. Thanks.

Try hard reset the iPhone by holding both home and sleep/wake buttons till it reboot. When Apple logo appears on the screen, release both buttons and it boot to the lock screen.

If the battery was completely dead, you would see nothing on the screen. It could be a bad video controller in the device, but I would venture to guess that it would probably be something else, as you still see something on the screen.

If a reset or a restore does not help, I would recommend taking it into Apple and have them take a look at it. It could be faulty and need to be replaced.

Thank you both! It was actually frozen and two days later booted up fine. It was after downloading a podcast. Go figure. The next time it happens I'll know what to do.
