Io8.1 microphone status icon?

A little knowledge requested...

I noticed a few days ago that my 5s w/iOS8.1 was "lite up", as in not going to sleep or getting locked down, after several minutes. I took a closer look and the status bar was blue and there was a microphone icon illuminated on the status bar. I have not seen (or expereienced) this before, but after clicking the home button, it all went away. And I forgot about it until today...

When it happened again, only this time for upwards to 30 minutes. Drained by battery down to 70% from 95% during that space of time.

I have looked through the iOS8.1 manual, and searched, but cannot find anything like this, so...

Blue status bar usually indicates tethering in progress.

Nope, blue status bar indicates that something in the background is actively using a Privacy controlled service. I get that when I have Garmin USA navigating a trip and I switch away to something else.

So, as Blackfeet correctly surmised, something in the background is actively listening to the microphone since it was the mic icon showing on the bar.

When that happens, tapping the status bar might bring the app to the front.
