Issue with Mail.app on iPad

Buddy of mine brought this up to me...

Mail.app on iPhone, in portrait mode, has the arrows in upper right hand corner to move to next message



On iPad... no arrows

I'm not sure if it is an oversight. It may be by design. Apple may have assumed that a majority of people view items from within the native Mail app in landscape mode, but I'm only speculating.
