What Is Backed Up On iCloud

Hello,
I've never had to restore my phone from iCloud. I now have an iPad & an iPhone & plan on backing up data to the iCloud. What is all backed up?? Are apps stored there or just a list of apps I had installed? I know photos, notes, emails, & contacts can be up there.
