Twitter using GPS?

I searched for this, but couldn't find anything about it.

Why is the official Twitter app using GPS the entire time you are in the app? Does it still use it when it is in the background? Is it killing your battery life?

I just figured out that you can turn it off in the new "Location Services" settings in the Settings app.
