I wasn't sure if it was a real email or a scam wanting me to give info

Most likely scam. Welcome to iMore! If it asked for information about your account, it's scam for sure. Apple doesn't ask for that info. You can report it to Apple here.

They may want you to forward it to them.
Afterwards, delete it.

Got email yesterday saying my iCloud locked down. Looked real until I followed link. Wanted ss#. Called Apple. It was scam and forwarded to Apple.

Yeah, Apple doesn't send emails about an account locked. You would see that when you tried to log in.
