how to restore contacts from icloud to iphone

contacts were deleted, I tried turning "contacts" off an on in icloud - didn't work

Hi, welcome to iMore.

First go to iCloud.com/#contacts on your computer.
Check if all contacts are still there.
If yes, go to Settings on the lower left of the screen and export all those contacts to your computer. You can choose whatever format you want it in.

After doing so, check on your iPhone if contacts is enabled in Settings > iCloud. If not, do this.
Now create a new random contact on your iPhone and see if it appears on iCloud on your computer.
Now do the opposite; create a rand contact on your computer and see if it shows up on your iPhone.

If the answer is yes to both of them, go ahead and delete all contacts from iCloud on your computer.
You can select them all and delete them in once if you want.

After all contacts are deleted, go to Settings of contacts on your computer and import that file you exported a few steps back.
If all is well, all contacts should appear after a few minutes on your iPhone.


If your answer was no after creating that random contact on your computer, make sure you have "All Contacts" selected under groups (upper left corner in the Contacts app on your iPhone.
