Why won't my iPad Mini accept my email address when trying to create an Apple ID?

I have a new apple mini ipad. I am trying to open a new apple id. moving through all the are fine until I reach add your Email address. it tells me that that address is already in use. This is the address that i use all the time so not sure how i get round this problem.
I do not want to change my address.

Did you already (in the past sometime) use your email address to create an Apple ID?
You need to use the password associated with that Apple ID, if so.
