Need some information on the iPhone 5s.

My mother just got her first smart phone, an iPhone 5s (I assume 16GB). I've never owned the 5s, but currently have an iPhone 7. What can the iPhone 5s do? What similarities do they have? Most importantly, what software updates should she get?

Welcome to iMore! The 5s will do most everything the 7 will do. The 7 may have a few new features, but not much. Better camera, etc. The 5s should run the latest OS. It should handle iOS 10.2 fine.

1. The iPhone 5S is like any other iPhone. There's basically no difference in 'what can the iPhone do between the iPhone 5S and 7. Every iPhone is an iPhone!

2. Everything other than
a) Camera - Much better on the 7
b) Battery - 1560 mAh on 5S to 1960 mAh on 7
c) Screen - 4" on 5S to 4.7" on 7. 5S does not have 3D Touch
d) Design - Bar design on 5S and circular on 7
e) SoC - A7 on 5S to A10 Fusion on 7
d) Speakers - Stereo speakers on the 7

3. Ask her to install iOS 10.2. I think the 5S might be supported till about iOS 12-13.
