Can Airpods be used one at a time?

i often listen to podcasts at work but need to have one ear open, can I have one airpod in the charger and one in my ear and have them still work?

Yes you can use just one perfectly fine. They automatically turn the audio from stereo to mono in this mode from what I heard.
