Why won't the app store let me download el capitan?

My macbook is currently running os x 10.6.8. When i try to click "get" in the app store to download el capitan nothing happens. It lets me press the get button but after that nothing loads or starts to download. Do you know what I can do to fix this?

most likely you already have downloaded an older version. It happened to me before. I deleted the old download and redownload and it works fine after that.
