I have a 6S plus, can I set up two separate contact lists?

You should be able to assign a filter to each contact and then sort for the filter. It worked for me on Windows Phones. I'm new here but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. I use to sort by P for personal and B for business as an example.

I've never seen an option like that on iPhones.

Yep, a group is the only way. This app can be used to create a group on iPhone.

Very little iPhone experience but learning. This is a readily available capability on WM and Android. I drew a conclusion that was obviously wrong. My apologies. More research next time on my part.
