If I leave my phone screen on, with wifi, will I still be connected and online to messenger and Facebook, and automatically receive messages ?? Thanks

Yes, your phone will not disconnect while the screen is on.
When your screen is off, your phone will fall back to cellular data to receive notifications. And from time to time it will even connect to wifi to perform background tasks.
In any instance, you will receive notifications and messages from any service anyway.
