why is my auto lock grey

someone said since my auto lock is grey and nothing will work I should reset my settings. will that mess up my phone or like erase everything..?

It will not erase "everything" and it will not erase any of your documents, photos, videos, music or any of your data. It will however, reset all "settings" to their native state. Example: if you have a custom ringtone set, the default ringtone will be put in its place.
