Why am I getting an error message when I try to use Facetime?

Facetime won't work on iPAD air

The Facetime app won't work on my iPAD air. I'm connecting to WiFi fine but when I enter my Apple ID (ID is good because I used it on iTUNES) the response is "Facetime activation can not sign in please check your network connection and try again". Any suggestions are appreciated.
