Why isn't the quick-reply feature working on my iPhone 5?

okay so on my iPhone 5 I pull down the quick-reply and it doesn't let me type as if my phone is frozen, a couple of my friends have this happening to them also and they don't know what to do either. So I have to click on it and respond in imessage and then come back to whatever I was doing. does anyone have this and has fixed it? or just knows how to fix it? please help!
