i have a grey background bar on the dispay of my iphone 5 and ipad3 how do i remove it?

The four apps on the bottom of my disply screen have a grey background, how do I remove this.

Are you talking about the iPhone/iPad dock? The only way to remove that is to jailbreak your device and install an appropriate tweak. It?s part of iOS, and cannot be changed/removed otherwise.
