Can I update my iPhone 3GS to iOS 7+ or will I have to get a new iPhone?

I tried to update my iphone 3gs with the latest OS and it downloaded OS version 6. I have been trying to download several common apps like Facebook, Craigslist, Ebay and they all require my phone to have OS 7 or higher. How can i get OS 7 onto my iphone. If it wont load any higher version than 6 to my phone because of its age do i have any alternatives other than a newer phone which is not an option for me?
